PURPOSE
AFUB is an umbrella organization comprising of organizations of and for the Blind in Africa. Founded in 1987, it has the sole purpose of ensuring access and expansion of quality services for all blind and partially sighted persons in the Continent. AFUB is dedicated to advancing the well being of the blind and visually impaired in Africa.
The specific aims of AFUB are:
- Influencing public policies and practices governing the education, health, welfare, social security, rehabilitation, employment, sports and recreation of blind people.
- Working for increased access by blind and visually impaired people on basic human rights through advocating for the elimination of discriminatory laws and practices affecting blind and visually impaired people.
- Facilitating, strengthening and developing national associations of the blind and visually impaired.
- Mobilizing resources at the local, national and international levels to support human resource development, and economic empowerment services for blind and visually impaired people.
- Encouraging exchange of information and experience among AFUB members and all other organizations.
AFUB's head office is located in Nairobi, Kenya. The organisation principally operates in its six regions of Africa; namely Eastern, Southern, Central, Northern, Francophone Western, and Anglophone Western. The Secretariat is headed by the Executive Director who reports to the Board of Officers. This Board has the role of policy formulation and guidance.
ADVOCACY
- Raising of awareness on issues that are specific to the blind and encouragement of positive altitude towards the blind throughout Africa.
- Review of the ratification of relevant international instruments and development of strategies to support members' endeavours in having their governments ratify such instruments.
To improve the Kenya Union of the Blind (KUB) advocacy skills, AFUB collaborated with KUB to enable the members to articulate their rights as visually impaired persons in the society. Policy issues for local advocacy for the domestication of UN Standard Rules in Kenyan national social policy development were discussed and six human rights documents transcribed into braille for the participants and KUB library. Informational posters covering Rule 5 (Accessibility), and Rule 15 (Legislation) were prepared and mounted in various locations with high human traffic within the City and in the other major towns of Kenya.
HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
- Supporting braille literary and training programs through national organizations.
- Conducting leadership-training seminars to strengthen national associations of the blind.
Integration among blind children in the regular school system is paying dividends throughout Africa. In Nairobi, Kenya the integrated Education program for the Visually Impaired children at Kilimani Primary School has succeeded in giving an equal footing to educational opportunities for visually impaired children.
In Lesotho, Jobo Raswoko, a blind student recently admitted to National University of Lesotho reflects that his success was only "possible as a result of being given a chance at an integrated school in Maseru. The braille materials provide by AFUB made it possible for us to continue with school and finally for me to reach the University. More youths in Africa should also benefit from this programme".
ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
- Supporting income-generating projects started by organizations and groups of the blind in Africa.
Small-scale income-generating projects are playing a major role in the economy of most sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries and have the potential to play even a greater role in employment creation and porverty alleviation. In the case of the visually impaired, it may be the only hope for a decent source of living. AFUB has supported income generating projects for the blind icountries of Africa for members engaged in banana growing, poultry keeping, gari making, small-scale bakeries, etc.
AFUB GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The Ordinary Session of the AFUB General Assembly held every four years will be convened in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, from October 2nd - 6th, 2000. The Assembly, the Supreme body, shall determine the general policies of the Union towards achieving its mission. The venue will be Ghion Hotel, located close to the Royal Palace.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
AFUB'S funds come mainly from bilateral sources; but it is not enough to support all the activities that we wish to implement. The generosity of the public is profoundly needed to fund the organisations critical work in supporting quality services for the blind and visually impaired persons in the continent.
Activities we seek to support include income-generating projects for the blind and visually impaired people, particularly blind women. In addition, we are very keen to obtain support to extend our Braille equipment supply activities to primary schools where blind and visually impaired children are integrated together with sighted children in the school system.
Choosing a name for your new baby is perhaps the most important thing you will do for your baby other than actually give birth. There is an increasing tendency to try to be different, giving baby a name that nobody else will share either by choosing a traditional name with different spelling, or by making up a name. If you are tempted by this bear in mind that the name that sounds cute for a baby may not suit a six foot hunk in his twenties! As for spelling, when teacher calls out Katey in the playground, Katie and Katy will also come running. Katey may find in later life that her name is usually mis-spelled and is an unnecessary nuisance. Which ever way you decide to go, record your child’s details on a birth plate so that he or she will know the birth weight and other details.

To get rid of stretch marks, consumers try different products like Bio-Oil. Some people have reported that it works. However, some people do not use the oil for stretch marks, but rather for scars. Also, many that used Bio-Oil for stretch marks reported that the product was not as effective as they expected. Furthermore, some customers reported that Bio-Oil caused skin irritation as well as rashes. The next common question that people ask is whether there is any product that totally eliminates stretch marks. In general, most topical treatments only help marks fade. To get additional information about removing stretch marks, visit a resource like the Stretch Mark Removal Guide, which provides reviews, product comparisons, and more.

The conventional way for a cell phone number lookup of a particular person is through telephone directory where a list of alphabetized telephone subscribers in a particular area is listed with their corresponding residential or commercial telephone number. The cell phone number lookup in the directory is color coded, white for residential and yellow for business and none for mobile numbers.
Because of internet technology, cell phone number lookup becomes faster and more efficient. Online directory search can be done as long as they have the searching skills and tools in finding them. Identifying unknown telephone numbers can be achieved by signing up in a reverse cell phone number lookup service. It is considered as an online caller ID service where one may get the complete information by just providing the telephone number in question.
The need for a reverse phone number lookup is evident to those people who are receiving prank calls and missed calls with unknown numbers. It can also be used as an address verification tool on particular individuals through their telephone numbers.
The availability of such cell phone number lookup makes pranksters think twice due to the fear of being caught if they continue to annoy other people when making unsolicited calls. Most importantly, it identifies what is unknown.

A child may only be baptised into the Catholic faith if at least one parent is a Catholic because of the need for the priest to have an expectation that the child will be raised in the Catholic faith. Parents will usually be expected to go to pre-baptism preparation classes if it is their first child to be Christened.
To the Catholic Church the baptism makes the child a member of the church. Being washed in holy water represents the washing away of original sin and being re-born into a new life in Christ. A Christening usually takes place in the local parish church during the main Sunday service so that the child can be welcomed into the church community. However, for those wanting a private ceremony, this can often be arranged with the priest.
In the Catholic Church one Godparent is seen as being sufficient and no more than two are permitted. Godparents should themselves have been baptised and usually it is a requirement that they have also been confirmed. Godparents are expected to instruct the child in matters concerning faith. If the parents wish to have a non-Catholic play a recognised role in their child’s life, the non-Catholic may be a ‘witness’ but not a Godparent.
Some priests will permit parents to choose readings for the service. Parents and Godparents will be asked to make promises and declarations that they believe in God and will raise the child to follow Christ. At the end of the service a candle may be lit in the church, or given to the parents, to represent the light that has come into their child’s life.
Mark the occasion with one of our unique personalised christening gifts.

I used to work at an ISP, it was quite fun work. In the early days of the internet we were the geeky forerunners and we all pretty much made up the rules as we went along. Security wasn’t a big issue, the only people who used the internet weren’t that type. But as the net grew, the responsibilities did too. All ISPs servers are constantly under attack from a variety of sources.
However one of my main worries was always about the logs we kept. Every ISP has them, in fact in most countries they are legally obliged to keep them. The logs contain the raw data of every single piece of data that goes through their portal. So that includes every email, IM message and web site each and every one of us has accessed.
It’s quite a responsibility, an entire online record of everything each user does over the internet. Even more worrying is the fact that the vast mjority of it is in clear text. This is due to the fact that most internet protocols such as HTTP operate in clear text. Which makes the first requirement of any one who wants any hope of anonymous surfing – that of encryption. Without it your surfing record is easily accessible to any one at the ISP, the Government, a hacker with access or in fact any individual with a court order.
